Stations of the Cross

Lenten Fact

A plenary indulgence is granted for those who piously exercise the Way of the Cross, actually moving from station to station where they are legitimately erected and while mediating on the passion and death of our Lord ("Enchiridion of Indulgences," No. 63).

Station One

Jesus is Condemned to Death

"Consider how Jesus, after having been scourged and crowned
with thorns, was unjustly condemned by Pilate
to die on the Cross.

"My Jesus, it was not Pilate; no, it was my sins that condemned
Thee to die. I beg of Thee, by the merits of this sorrowful
journey, to assist my soul in its journey towards eternity.
I love Thee, my Jesus; I love Thee more than myself; I am sorry
for having offended Thee. Never let me stray from Thee again.
Grant that I may always love Thee and do Thy will. Amen."

Say the Our Father

"Our Father, Who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name; Thy
kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen."

Say the Hail Mary

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us
sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

Say the Glory Be

"Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."

Station Two
Jesus is Made to Bear His Cross

"Consider how Jesus, in making this journey with the Cross on"
"His shoulders, offered to His Father the death He was about"
"to undergo, for us."

"My Jesus, I embrace all the trials Thou hast willed for me until"
"death. I beg of Thee, by the merits of the pain in which Thou didst"
"suffer in carrying Thy Cross, to give me the graces and strength"
"necessary to carry mine with perfect patience and resignation."
"I love Thee, my Jesus; I love Thee more than myself; I am sorry"
"for having offended Thee. Never let me stray from Thee again."
"Grant that I may always love Thee and do Thy will.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Three
Jesus Falls the First Time under His Cross

Consider this first fall of Jesus under His Cross. His flesh
was torn by His scourges, His head crowned with thorns, and He
had lost a great deal of blood. He was so weakened that
He could scarcely walk, and yet He had to carry this great weight"
upon His shoulders. The soldiers struck Him rudely, and thus He
fell several times on His journey.

"My Jesus, it is not the weight of the Cross, but of my sins,
which has made Thee suffer so much pain. Ah, by the merits of
this first fall, deliver me from ever falling into grave sin.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Four
Jesus Meets His Afflicted Mother

Consider the meeting of the Jesus and His Mother, Mary, which
took place on this journey. Jesus and Mary looked at each other,
and their looks became as arrows piercing each other's hearts,
which loved each other so tenderly.

"My most loving Jesus, by the sorrow that Thou didst experience
in this meeting, grant me the grace of a truly devoted love for
Thy most holy mother. And thou, my Queen, who was so overwhelmed
with sorrow, obtain for me by thy intercession a most loving and
tender remembrance of the Passion of thy Son, Jesus.
I love Thee, my Jesus; I love Thee more than myself; I am sorry
for having offended Thee. Never let me stray from Thee again.
Grant that I may always love Thee and do Thy will...Amen."

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Five
Simon Helps Jesus to Carry His Cross

Consider how the Jews, seeing that at each step Jesus was
weakening and was at the point of expiring. They feared that He
would die before He was crucified. So they forced Simon
to carry the Cross behind Our Lord.

"My Jesus, I will not refuse the Cross as Simon did; I accept it,
I embrace it. I accept in particular the death Thou has chosen
for me, with all the pains which may accompany it; I unite it to Thy
death - I offer it to Thee. Thou hast died for love of me; I will
die for love of Thee, and to please Thee. Help me by Thy grace.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Six
Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

Consider how the holy woman named Veronica, seeing Jesus so
afflicted, and His face bathed in sweat and blood, presented
Him with a towel with which He wiped His adorable face, leaving
on it the impression of His holy countenance.

"My most beloved Jesus, Thy face was beautiful before, but
in this journey it has lost all its beauty, and wounds and blood
have disfigured it. Alas, my soul also was once beautiful, when
it received Thy grace in Baptism; but I have disfigured it
by my sins. Thou alone, my Redeemer, canst restore it to its
former beauty. Do this by Thy Passion; and grant that I may
be cleansed by Thy Precious Blood.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Seven
Jesus Falls the Second Time

Consider the second fall of Jesus under the Cross - a fall
which renews the pain of all the wounds of the head and members
of our afflicted Lord.

"My most gentle Jesus, how many times Thou hast pardoned me,
and how many times I have fallen again, and begun again to
offend Thee! Oh, by the merits of this new fall, give me the"
necessary grace to persevere until death. Grant that in all
temptations which gather against me that I may always commend
myself to Thee.
I love Thee my Jesus; I love Thee more than myself; I am sorry
for having offended Thee.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Eight
Jesus Speaks to the Women of Jerusalem

Consider how those women wept at seeing Jesus in such a
pitiable state, streaming with blood as He walked along.
But Jesus said to them: Do not weep for Me, but weep for
yourselves and for your children.

"My Jesus, laden with sorrows, I weep for the offenses I
have committed against Thee, because of the pains they have
deserved, and still more because of the displeasure they
have caused Thee, who hast loved me so much. It is Thy love,
more than the fear of hell, which causes me to weep for my sins.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Nine
Jesus Falls the Third Time

Consider the third fall of Jesus. His weakness was extreme,
and the cruelty of His executioners excessive, as they tried to
hurry Him when He had scarcely strength to move.

"O my outraged Jesus, by the merits of the weakness Thou
didst suffer on Thy way to Calvary, give me strength to conquer
all human pride, and all my wicked passions, which have led me
to despise Thy friendship.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Ten
Jesus is Stripped of His Garments

Consider the rage in which His executioners stripped Him of
His clothes. His inner garments adhered to His torn flesh, and
when they took the clothing off, the skin came with them.
Soothe your Savior thus cruelly treated, and say to Him:

"My innocent Jesus, by the merits of the pain and grief Thou
hast felt, help me to strip myself of all affection to things of
earth, in order that I may place all my love in Thee, who art
so worthy of my love.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Eleven
Jesus is Nailed to the Cross

Consider how Jesus, after being thrown on the Cross, extended
His hands and offered to His Eternal Father the sacrifice
of His life for our salvation. These barbarians fastened
Him with nails, and then, raising the Cross, allowed Him to
die with anguish.

"My Jesus, let my mind and my heart be always at the foot of
the Cross so as to never forget the love Thou hast given me
and the sacrifice Thou hast paid for me.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Twelve
Jesus Dies on the Cross

Consider how Jesus, after three hours' agony on the Cross,
consumed at length with anguish, abandons Himself into His
Father's hands, bows His head, and dies.

"My dying Jesus, I kiss devoutly the Cross on which Thou didst
die for love of me. I have merited by my sins to die a miserable
death, but Thy death is my hope. Ah, by the merits of Thy death,
give me grace to die with burning love only for Thee, I commit my
soul into Thy hands.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Thirteen
Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross

Consider how, after the death of Our Lord, two of His
disciples, Joseph and Nicodemus, took Him down from the Cross
and placed Him in the arms of His afflicted mother, who
received Him with tenderness and pressed Him to her bosom.

"O Mother of Sorrow, for the love of thy Son, accept me
for thy servant, and pray to Him for me. And Thou, my
Redeemer, since Thou hast died for me, permit me to love Thee
for I wish but only Thee, and nothing more.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

Station Fourteen
Jesus is Placed in the Tomb

Consider how the disciples carried the body of Jesus to the
tomb, accompanied by His holy mother, who arranged it in the
tomb with her own hands. They then closed the tomb and
all withdrew.

"O, my Jesus, I kiss the stone that encloses Thee. But Thou
didst rise again the third day. I beg of Thee by Thy resurrection,
make me rise glorious with Thee at the last day, to be always
united with Thee in heaven, to praise Thee and love Thee forever.
I love Thee, my Jesus; I love Thee more than myself; I am sorry
for having offended Thee. Never let me stray from Thee again.
Grant that I may always love Thee and do Thy will. Amen"

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb, Jesus.

Amen."

FOLLOW THE WAY OF THE CROSS

GOD BLESS YOU

"We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee."
"Because by Thy Holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world."

CLOSING PRAYER

Dear God,
As I follow and study Your life from the time of
Your condemnation until Your Crucifixion and death,
it is also a time to review my own life and ask for
help in those areas where I have not done well.
When I find areas where I need help, let me not
become discouraged or give in to despair,
but rather turn to You as a child to a parent, and
humbly ask for Your divine help and guidance.
Help me live one day at a time, and never relive
the past or worry about the future.
Help me accept each day as it comes, and to live
it the way that You and I know best.
Never let me say, "If I had the chance to live
it over, I would do this or that."
Knowing myself, if I had the chance, I would
probably make the same mistakes again.
Help me to live each moment to its fullest,
and in the newness of each moment give me
comfort of soul and peace of mind.

AMEN
